Cold Shift
Warm company from a cold and strange place. These are transmissions from Jaran, the facility manager at the Deep Earth Anomaly Department, East Antarctica. The radio may or may not work, but he is keeping a log.
Strange things happen. Figures appear at the edge of the ice. Entities arrive, sometimes out of nowhere. And a facility unit named Ingrid does her best.
Something still does not add up, though.

Hey there.
SPEAKER_01This is Jaran. I'm the facility manager at the Deep Earth Anomaly Department located on the coastal strip in East Antarctica. I'm signing in for yet another cold shift. So Frederick is gone again. And this time he he left me a note with only one word on it. Yehuda cryptic boy that that Frederick. Very cryptic. I do wonder where he is going. Does he have access to mirrors all over the globe? I mean are there even any left? Also, is there a mirror world looking exactly like ours? You know, where left is right, right is left, up is well still up, I guess. And if it is, am I in it? And if so, why isn't Frederick in this world? You know? Unless he is some kind of vampire. And maybe this world is actually the mirror world and not the other way around. So that every time he looks into it he doesn't see himself, you know. Which could mean that I am the vampire. As I don't see myself in some of the mirrors on this side either. Huh. This feels like a good old mind puzzle that will require some time. Maybe Thomas Gainde has got an answer. The now overseer, the the resident overseer of this facility, he he sure moved in. I mean, where did he get all his stuff from? He just moved into one of the crew cabins, knocked down a wall, so two of the crew cabins are now one big crew cabin. And he he decorated it with all sorts of stuff. I mean, where does it come from? He's a weird man, but I'm very confident that he's not the devil. There's I mean, there's no traces of evil in him. I I I saw a tear coming from his eyes when he when he found one of the fluorescent spiders uh dead. Which was quite sad, but if Thomas Grind were the devil, he would not have cried. I don't I I don't think he would admit that he was crying, but I saw it. And it's fine, totally fine. But I saw it. Anyways, Frederick will show up when he is ready for it. Uh I just hope he's doing okay. Speaking of friends, I tried reaching Alexander Voss today on my device. Um no signal. At least he didn't reply, so I I I just assume there's no signal. He's probably sleeping, fused with the desk. I wonder if that means the desk is also sleeping. And I I never got to the bottom of that. If if the desk is a part of his nervous system or or not, I I just couldn't get myself to ask. It seems rude, but uh yeah. I did get something through. That's what I'm trying to say. First I only heard the static crackling away before I heard what sounded like singing. And not the singing that I heard in the blizzard, like the sirens. Because after a while I recognized the song. It's a it's a Dutch shanty that Niels Kuyper, the nuclear engineer on board the submarine underneath this facility, taught me a few years back. I don't remember all the words, but I I recognized it when I heard it. And they seem to be in good spirits down there, and and when they had finished singing, I sent the voice message. I didn't want to disturb them. But apparently they are able to pick up signals from my Morse signal device. Which isn't really a mystery, uh, you know, it it is a 60th century submarine after all. Old, but probably one of the best of integers.
SPEAKER_00Yarn!
SPEAKER_01They all shouted, How are you, old buddy Jupiter? Which is what they call me. I don't know why, but I like it. It makes me sound like a Greek god. I told them I'm feeling really good, and I told him about Joshua that he's currently staying here. They call Joshua old buddy Juno. So we had a banter back and forth, and uh it was very much fun catching up with them. It's been more than a day to say the least. And um when they all settled down, so to speak, and Niels Kuyper remained on the line, and he said the eight towers of the ocean floor are glowing again. So we didn't really speak for a little bit. Now, okay. I love the eight towers, they look magnificent, truly out of this world. If you if if you imagine the most impressive architectural construct ever, multiply it with 100,000 million, and you're still nowhere close. And they're they're all equal in size, they're smooth, positioned in a circle, uh, and in the middle there is a globe made from glass. I think and and on top of each tower is a smaller glass pyramid. And the details on each of the towers uh are the icing on that cake. I mean, man oh man and a bucket of sand. It's it's it's drawn with godlike precision. But what lives there though, or lived, it's hard to say. I I've never seen any signs of anything except the old crab. Carl the crab I call him. Ancient little dude. However, in in one of the old notebooks from Howard Duke, the the astronomer who lived here long, long, long, long, long, long, long ago, wrote Let me just see I have it here somewhere on my desk. Nope. There it is. Okay. When the towers of eight starts to create a glimmer to light up the floor. Wonder not why, wonder not how death will come knock on your door. So yeah, the the poem is nice. The meaning not so much. However, to me there is comfort in the fact that Howard Duke was very fond of hot chocolate brandy. I mean very, very, very, very, very, very fond of hot chocolate brandy. What I'm trying to say is that he isn't necessarily to be trusted when it comes to prophecies. So, you know, perhaps whatever lives in the eight towers of the ocean floor just got home and turned the lights on, you know. I mean, what do I know? I didn't know about it until the annual subparticle reset. Uh you know, perhaps they have been away since then. Who knows how whatever lives there operates when it comes to time. You know, a decade could be a minute to them. So I think for the time being, uh I'll choose to believe that they have been away on holiday. You know, maybe they have been visited visiting relatives in an ancient part of the universe somewhere. Howard Duke and his hot chocolate brand, yeah. When he was found, they had to spend five days removing bottles to move his body. Not that the brandy slowed his machine-like mind down, though. No sir. He was an eccentric boy, if there ever was one, but he also managed to to contain wormholes. So brandy or not, here he comes, you know. He was also the one who made powdered milk a necessity. So I I say it again, if the radio works, please find me and bring some. Please. I'd compensate you with a warm company, good conversations, and a night sky you wouldn't believe truly. Anyways, when Niels Kuyper told me about the eight hours being lit again, the poem came to mind. That's all. But like I said, I'll I'll deal with it when I have to. Right now I have the comet to think about, you know, these days. The comet which isn't really a comet, but I still prefer calling it a comet. Just to clarify, you know, if you, oh great diver from the far future, comes across this message, this transmission. And I told Niels all about Howard Duke, that everything he said, or in this case wrote, should be taken with a pinch of salt, as I like to say, and that we cannot control what happens in the future, only how we choose to deal with the present. So we agreed to check in on one another once a week, at least, and if anything happens that we think both of us should know about reach out. Then I told him to say hi to Luxafron and remind him to send me those recipes. He is the best chef on the ocean floor. Luxafron. Man o man. Then we hung up. Or we didn't really hang up as the Morse device doesn't have that option. We just said goodbye and well, stopped talking. And after all this talk about Howard Duke, I really felt like checking out the astronomy quarters where he usually spent all his time and took his last breath. Also, I like walking up the spiral stairs to the astronomy area. I like the fact that it is possible to walk in circles and still arrive somewhere new, you know. Also, I needed to check out on the comet to see if there had been any developments. The last four times I have checked, there's been no movement at all. So when I came up there, Thomas Grind was already there, towering over a pile of papers and notebooks, and his eyes, blue eyes, looking frantic, but he was calm and composed, like Beethoven, like a Beethoven composition. So I asked him, What are you doing? I asked. None of that, he replied and pointed to the telescope. I will have none of it, he said. Now, I have no idea of what he was talking about, so I went to look into the telescope. He's cryptic also. Where's the comet? I asked. Grounded, two hundred and nine meters away from this very facility, Thomas replied. And sure as snow is white, Thomas was right. There it was. A sphere the size of a small mountain in even from two hundred and nine meters away, it looked enormous. Oh, I said. Oh indeed, Thomas said, without moving his eyes from the papers. Be a sport, he said, and seal this facility. He didn't say it as much as he commanded it. You know, this is the overseer we're talking about, so I went down and at the moment I'm in my room. The facility is sealed. Doors are sealed, windows are sealed, all the exit is ex exits and entrances are sealed. Seal the deal, Mr. O'Neill. So whatever comes next, I'm not sure. I I I believe Thomas has got a lead on this. Yeah. I'm a bit worried, I must confess, you know, about the Titanic iron sphere outside, but what can you do? I'll say what you can do. Wait is what we can do. You know, this is after all a research facility, a deep earth anomaly research facility, not an armed to the teeth facility. Also, we don't know if if the sphere or whatever lives inside it is hostile. Perhaps they are evaluating us, for all we know. Maybe they just parked to check their map, maybe they took a wrong turn somewhere. Who knows until they do. Am I right? So yeah, I'll park my worries and then wait. And while we wait, let me play you uh a new song on my ukulele that I have been working on. So yeah, you know, as they say, uh a song is the best medicine for a little worry.
SPEAKER_00Yeah So here it goes. I got a long road ahead, but I grabbed nice pair of shoes as I fled. I run fast in Addy Das and if I ever run into Lucifer, I will ask him to join our crew.
SPEAKER_01We'll go fast in Addie Death Still working on it, but um I think it shows promise. So yeah now I had a dream last day that there were two of me in this facility. Imagine that, how cool would it be to be in a band with myself. You know, also we would get twice as much work done here, you know, running this facility. But yeah, anyways, dreams are how we go on vacation down here, so I think I'll dive into another vacation, so to speak, as the sun is about to set, and um you know I need to be well rested also in if, when, and how we have to deal with the comet. So yeah. This is Jan signing off yet another cold shift.
